Pro's:
- Includes a nice assortment of mini-figures (including one exclusive to this set Yoda in a Santa costume) and mini-scale ships in one package.
- Each mini-figure and mini-scale ship is packaged separately in its own bag instead of being mixed together in one or two bags.
Con's:
- This set is aimed at collectors more than kids who would like a set to play with.
- The building instructions are not printed in a booklet, they are printed on the inside of the box.
- The price of this set ($49.99 at Toy's-R-Us) is way too high for the number of bricks included (266).
- The set includes 24 sub-sets to build, but not all of them are Star Wars items or separate sets of their own.
Some detail on the con's:
To read the building instructions as intended the builder has to tear open perforated "doors" on one side of the box which damages the packaging and for a collector whom this set is intended that reduces the value of the item as a whole.
The per piece price on this set works out to be $0.19. Even with taking advantage of the rare Lego sale at Toy's-R-Us this set cost me $38.62, which is still $0.15 per piece and a lot more that I think it is worth. I'm a collector who is trying to build a complete collection of Star Wars Lego sets and even I had a hard time justifying the purchase of this set on sale, and I was highly disappointed after opening it and building it.
The set includes 9 mini-figures (including droids) and 11 mini-scale ships. That accounts for only 20 of the 24 sub-sets. There is one sub-set which looks like a 4 legged brown droid or animal, but it has no head and looks like it might be the walking seat/chair used by Nute Gunray in Episode 1 (without a written explanation or picture showing its use I am guessing based on my knowledge of Star Wars what it is).
There are 2 sub-sets of nothing but accessories (guns, light saber, crossbow, tools) for the mini-figures and small stands to hold the accessories. Why the accessories are not includes with all the mini-figures they are intended for I do not know. Having accessories as sub-sets makes the open/build 1 set per day disappointing. The battle droid comes with its own gun and Santa Yoda comes with a walking stick, back pack, and two tiles that fit in the backpack. None of the other figures have accessories with them. The tools (a wrench and hammer) don't seem to go with any of the figures, there are no mechanic mini-figs. One set is a Christmas tree which I assume is meant to go with the Santa Yoda.
For a set aimed at collectors it seems like either the idea was rushed and not well thought out, or it's taking advantage of those who really want the rare Santa Yoda for their mini-fig collection by throwing in some other items and selling it at a price that is outrageous even for the new pricing we are seeing this year. I really hope the set is just not well thought out and not something to take advantage of collectors gullibility.
Overall I give this set a 4 out of 10. The price, the poorly thought out packaging for a collector set, and the fact that 4 of the sub-sets are accessories that should have been part of the other sub-sets (making room for 4 other ships or figures) are what make this set not worth buying in my opinion. |
